Maryland Safety Inspection

BA Auto Care is certified to perform Maryland Vehicle Safety Inspections

You need a Maryland safety inspection if:

You just moved to Maryland and need to register your car
You are selling or transferring a car to someone other than a spouse, parent or child.

If you meet one of these criteria, you’ve landed in the right place. We are a certified Maryland State Inspection Station and can perform the Maryland Safety Inspection for you. Our Maryland State Safety inspections are performed on dry days and take about 90 minutes to complete. A skilled technician will road test the vehicle and then go through a multipoint inspection – performing all the inspection items to the Maryland standard.

If you are buying a vehicle that has not been inspected, we strongly recommend that you have it inspected first before agreeing to purchase the vehicle. This is a very detailed inspection, so it is an excellent indicator of the condition of the vehicle you are planning to purchase.

Maryland Safety Inspection Checklist

During a vehicle safety inspection, the vehicle identification number and odometer reading will be noted while ensuring the car is safe & operating accordingly. Aside from the road test, a safety inspection inspects the condition of a number of items listed by the state of Maryland to ensure the vehicle is operating properly. Here is a list of the main items that are inspected, and the full list located here.

  • Brake System
  • Condition of Tires and Wheels
  • Emissions Equipment & Exhaust System
  • Steering & Wheel Alignment
  • Suspension
  • Lighting & Electrical Systems
  • Doors, Mirrors, and Windshield
  • Speedometer & Odometer
  • Bumpers, Fenders, and Trunk Condition

Frequent Questions & Concerns

  • What happens if I fail?

If your car fails, you have 30 days to have it repaired. It’s a good idea to have the car repaired at the same place you have it inspected, so be sure to choose an auto repair shop you would feel comfortable with.

  • Is this the same as an Emissions Inspection?

An emission inspection is totally different from a safety inspection. The Maryland Vehicle Emissions Program (VEIP) is a scheduled inspection every two years. You can find a location here.

  • Do I need to do anything before my inspection?

No, but being proactive by checking your car for visible leaks, cracks, issues with the wipers, lights, horn, or tires can help with a smooth inspection process.
